Trigo, a computer vision firm based in Israel, has reportedly collaborated with Netto Marken-Discount, a discount supermarket giant, to power a hybrid cashier-less grocery store in Munich, Germany.
The company modifies current supermarkets into entirely hybrid or autonomous digital stores, consolidating ceiling-mounted cameras and AI technology to create a smooth shopping experience.
As shoppers enter, they will use an app to scan a QR code and will then be free to pick up products and leave without checking out from the cashier. The purchase amount is deducted automatically through the registered payment method stored in the app.
Netto, which is owned by The EDEKA Group, has more than 4,000 stores throughout Germany. It provides one of the largest selections of groceries in the regional discount market.
With more than 3,500 SKUs (stock-keeping units), the 250 sq. meter hybrid store will be situated in the Schwabing West neighborhood of Munich near the University of Munich which is prominently a residential area occupied mainly by students.
The store will offer students and other shoppers access to discount prices on daily goods which include freshly baked fruit, vegetables, and goods. On the customer’s first visit, the age verification for tobacco and alcohol will be processed once through the app. Netto has opted for a hybrid concept with the availability of the checkout counter to ensure that shoppers preferring traditional checkout can still use the service.
As the leading food discounter in Germany, Netto has tapped the privacy-by-design, GDPR-compliant solution of Trigo which conceals a shopper’s data of product choice and in-store movement and does not use any facial recognition or biometric data. This is a crucial breakthrough as the country possesses some of the toughest privacy and data protection regulations across the world.
Recently, Trigo collaborated with other big retailers like REWE, ALDI Nord, and Tesco to expand its convenient shopping solution throughout Europe.
