Polestar has reportedly collaborated with suppliers including Swedish steelmaker SSAB and Germany's ZF Friedrichshafen to expedite the development of a climate-friendly car.

The Swedish carmaker stated that it has inked letters of intent to collaborate with Swedish seatbelt and airbag maker Autoliv, Norwegian aluminum maker Norsk Hydro, SSAB, ZF, along with ZKW Group, the lighting, and electronics unit of LG Corp. The intention is to reduce carbon emissions across different areas of its electric vehicles.

SSAB will collaborate with Polestar for fossil-fuel steel whereas Hydro will work on carbon-free aluminum, and others will focus on curbing emissions in the production of components and parts.

This activity is part of Polestar 0, the project for producing a climate-neutral car that was announced by the company back in April last year. It intends to eliminate carbon emissions linked to its supply chain; from material refining, mining, and production to sea and overland transportation instead of just planting trees to try compensating carbon emissions.

Therefore, Polestar is openly inviting universities, researchers, governments, suppliers, experts, entrepreneurs, investors, innovators, and authorities to collaborate and try to solve this problem.

The automotive sector is under immense pressure to shift to electricity in China and Europe whilst tackling the issue of additional carbon emissions produced in EV manufacturing in comparison to conventional car manufacturing mainly due to the large batteries.

Unlike many carmakers, Polestar has published evaluations of the carbon footprints of its electric vehicles over their complete lifecycle. The company will go public by merging with Gores Guggenheim, a U.S.-listed blank-check company supported by investment bank Guggenheim Partners and billionaire Alec Gores, in an agreement that will value nearly USD 20 billion.

Apart from the open invitation, the Swedish carmaker will be contacting researchers worldwide using SDSN, the largest academic network in the world working in support of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.
