Kalmar, a cargo handling services and solutions provider, and Nokia, a telecommunications company, have recently announced the expansion of their collaboration. This will enable the companies to offer new solutions for ports and intermodal terminal operators, who seek to automate service operations and ensure high productivity.
With this extended collaboration, the two companies will merge their expertise in communications and cargo handling technology in the new joint go-to-market ventures, research collaboration, and integrated solutions development.
In the 1st collaboration program, Kalmar and Nokia will incorporate Nokia 4G & 5G private wireless networks for use with rubber-tyred gantry cranes, automated stacking carriers, and straddle carriers to drive the container handling efficiency and on-site safety of the ports and terminal operators. In the near-term, it will also focus on various 5G research projects in Finland and enhance the ultra-reliable positioning of the automated cargo handling equipment to ensure safe acceleration.
As a part of the joint go-to-market & solutions development strategy, the telecommunications company will provide the Nokia DAC (Digital Automation Cloud), which is an industrial-grade digitalization platform. It supports a cloud-based monitoring system by offering a secure and high-performance private wireless network with edge computing capabilities and industrial connectors.
Nokia Cloud & Network Services’ VP of Transportation, Logistics & Manufacturing, Jochen Apel, has reportedly stated that the alliance will help bring a range of the company’s digitalization offerings with a strong emphasis on private wireless, to increase the cardo handling technology know-how of Kalmar. This joint approach will benefit ports & intermodal terminal operators by boosting their efficiency and productivity.
According to Kalmar Automation Solutions’ President, Antti Kaunonen, various ports and terminal operators are thrilled to experience productivity gains through the cargo handling automation. The integration of Kalmar’s pioneering solutions and the latest digitalization innovation of Nokia will lead to the delivery of new-generation offerings that can transform the port terminal operations.
