The feature uses the phone’s camera for overlaying the general directions, local grocery stores, restaurant listings and many other helpful guides. Google recently made it to the headlines as it introduced its much-awaited feature of AR (Augmented Reality) navigation on the Google Maps. As per reliable reports, Google Maps will now have a walking-focused AR feature that is currently being made available to the select local guides under the massive community reviewer program of Google. They will play the initial testers and help the company in perfecting the feature for its public debut. Reportedly, the latest AR feature was unveiled first at the Google I/O 2018, which is the annual conference for technical developers. The feature uses the phone’s camera for overlaying the general directions, local grocery stores, restaurant listings and many other helpful guides. As per a report by First Post, the tech giant is currently using what it calls the ‘Visual Positioning System’ to search for landmarks and estimate the precise position, along with orientation, with big arrows and directions showing up once the locations get figured out. It has further been reported that Google recently shared many qualifiers about the new feature like, it is meant to be used for walking directions and not while driving. The AR navigation feature helps in conserving the phone’s battery life and the data usage. Sources claim that the AR navigation is appropriate for a short-term usage and prompts the user to lower the phone after a while of using the feature and simultaneously, displays the customary map interface. Sources added that this saves users, who have been following a feed from their phones, from the risk of knocking into each other on the way to their locations. Google affirmed that the masses will be able to access the feature only after the company is satisfied with the response it gets after the trials. Apparently, the latest feature gestures to a world where headset-and glasses-based Augmented Reality is a common sight and is said to be a huge first step in implementing this reality.
