Europe’s leading airline easyJet has reportedly adopted SkyBreathe®, a novel 360-degree eco-flying solution to curb fuel usage and in turn CO2 emissions of its fleet.

This move comes as part of the airline’s objective to reduce its carbon footprint from flying throughout Europe.

Under the terms of the agreement, the fuel management software will collect and analyze data automatically from over 300 easyJet-operated aircraft and combine them with data acquired from other sources such as weather conditions, payload, flight paths, maintenance, and Air Traffic Control.

For those unversed, SkyBreathe® is developed by OpenAirlines and is based on Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Cloud. It allows airlines to save fuel and curb their carbon footprint by around 5%.

The solution will seek the most relevant opportunities for fuel-saving and produce actionable insights that will be shared with all shareholders through easy-to-read, synthetic dashboards. Based on these insights, the airline will benefit from a comprehensive understanding of its operations. The solution enables the execution of the most effective ground procedures like turnaround, takeoff, taxi, and pushback as well as in-flights procedures like cruise, approach, climb, landing, etc. to optimize carbon reduction.

According to the Director of Flight Operations at easyJet Captain David Morgan, the implementation of SkyBreathe® allows the airline to easily identify areas of improvement which will be crucial in curbing its carbon emissions with concrete and immediate outcomes.

Captain Morgan added that the airline plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 which is the reason it is collaborating with a range of partners to curb currently forming carbon emissions as well as expedite future development of carbon-free technology.

Today, easyJet joins a proactive community of over 50 airlines worldwide that have adopted SkyBreathe® including Norwegian, Air France, Atlas Air, Flydubai, and IndiGo.

It is worth noting that easyJet flies on the most popular routes of Europe than any other airline. In 2019, the airline carried over 96 million passengers and nearly 16 million passengers were business travelers.
