Disney+Hotstar tests two ultra-affordable subscription plans in India

Popular streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar is reportedly testing ultra-affordable subscription plans in India starting at ₹49 (USD 0.65) per month. The move comes following major price cuts by competitor Netflix in India.

The new Disney+ Hotstar plan will be priced at ₹49 as an introductory offer. This price comes after a ₹50 discount, which suggests that once the offer period terminates, the price could be renewed to ₹99 (USD 1.32) per month.

The ₹49 plan includes access to the complete content library of Disney+ Hotstar, comprising TV, movies, live sports, and Hotstar Original content. The plan supports only one device login and the resolution is restricted to HD (720p). Viewers will see commercials while streaming as the plan is supported by ads.

In addition, the streaming platform is testing another subscription plan priced at ₹199 (USD 2.65), which gives viewers a subscription service for six months. The access and the streaming quality are similar to the ₹49 plan. This plan too will be unveiled as an introductory discount and will later cost ₹299 (USD 3.99).

The plan is currently tested for select Android users, which means that all users will not be receiving the price update on their Disney+ Hotstar accounts. Furthermore, the plan is limited to select payment methods which include PhonePe, Paytm, card payments, or UPI payments.

The last time Disney+ Hotstar revised its plans in India was back in July 2021 when the platform introduced the Mobile plan of ₹499 (USD 6.65) alongside the Super plan of ₹899 (USD 11.99) and the Premium plan of ₹1,499 (USD 19.99).

The faceoff with Netflix

Recently, Netflix announced a significant price cut in its subscription plans for India. The streaming giant is offering monthly subscriptions starting at ₹149 (USD 1.99), down from the earlier ₹199. The price cut comes with increasing competition from other OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, Disney+ Hotstar, and SonyLIV, among others.
