Recycling technology of CARBOIS is the first one to treat all forms of PET waste through enzymatic treatment CARBOIS, a company developing bio-industrial solutions to reinvent the lifecycle of textile polymers and plastic, recently announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance regarding a patent for its proprietary method of recycling PET plastic waste, issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Apparently, CARBOIS has now been recognized for inventing a propriety method of having complex plastics recycled, including multi-layered, colored and opaque products that contain a mixture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and a minimum of one additional component such as vinyl, rubber, paper, aluminum, wood, polyolefins, cotton or nylon fibers and starch. Reportedly, several products are made up of multiple plastic polymers mixed with each other or components that are organized as layers. Subsequently, these products become non-recyclable through existing thermo-mechanical processes where mono material is needed. Sorting and other traditional pretreatments tend to reach their limit due to an incapability in separating PET from other components. Citing reliable sources, the technology used in CARBOIS is reliable and stable as it depolymerizes PET no matter the mixed composition of PET plastic products or the presence of other polymers or components. It is capable of recovering PET building blocks from complex plastics and it purifies and separates for use in the original application. The patent applied to CARBOIS and its infinite recycling technology is the second one for the company in U.S. and it protects the firm’s innovation through the year 2033. CARBOIS, besides this patent, is the owner of 116 titles around the world that represent 30 patent families, out of which six protect the proprietary process of recycling in full and five of them are related to enzymes which degrade PET. CARBOIS’ CEO, Jean-Claude Lumaret said that the patent confirms the company’s unique leadership and expertise in the development of infinite recycling solutions for all sorts of PET waste, specially the ones that are untreatable due to traditional recycling processes.
